EVENTS
26th April: JMK Directors Training
Royal and Derngate
Directing Trauma 6-8pm
In this 2 hour workshop we will be looking at trauma and how it impacts the individual and collective. We will look at how these themes can impact on the rehersal room and how to support actors who have both lived experiences of traumatic events or are embodying a character. We will lapso look at how these themes can impact on the cast/crew and audience. There will be space for thinking about your own work and developing critical thinking when designing a safe space.
25th May: In Good Company Workshop
Derby Theatre
Challenging with Care 3-5pm
How to take care of audiences without compromising artistic intent.
This workshop is designed to offer a space for companies and artists to think about how to suppor audiences effectively from page to stage. When to ask the importan questions about audience care during rehersals, and how to set your own boundaries within your work.
With theatrical immersion beginning to change our views of audience engagement, do we need to reformat our thinking around audience care?
With theatres and productions becoming increasingly aware of ‘appropriate’ trigger warnings, how do we ensure that we offer enough information to potential audiences, yet continue to surprise them?

Mindfullness and Wellbeing for Freelancers
As the need to talk about mental health increases across society this naturally becomes something artists create work about. Artists can also be locked into work/no work cycles, long hours of work and feel strain from continually having to prove their value. These things impact on our wellbeing and can leave us feeling depleted or with complex feelings.
In this 2 hour session, we will explore what wellbeing means within an arts context and how to create a culture of self care for yourself and the industry.

Promoting Wellbeing in the Arts
In an art world that either runs at 100 miles an hour or feels like we are in stuck in a 3 hour queue on the M25, how do we take time to look after ourselves? Drama therapist and theatre practitioner Nikki Disney hosts a workshop focused on caring for yourself, looking at artist resilience and much needed ‘bounce back ability’, moving forward to a place of acceptance. The workshop will offer a place to connect and explore blocks to projects, stress reduction techniques and somewhere to discuss how art can help and hinder our mental health.
October 2017; Writing East Midlands
Boundaries and Safeguarding in the Arts Workshop
As the call for workshops using arts for health increases, many artists and writers find themselves alone working with groups out in the community. This can be a rewarding experience, but can often feel isolating particularly when disclosures occur or situations become difficult.
The aim of this workshop is to develop thinking around safeguarding requirements and where our responsibilities begin and end. We will look at safeguarding legislation and duty of care along with offering thinking around personal boundaries when working with vulnerable groups.
By the end of the workshop you will have an understanding of basic safeguarding requirements and around your own personal boundaries and how to deal with difficult situations when they arise.
Suitable for all writers and artists facilitating workshops or interested in gaining training in this area.
